Data Platform Lead

Location: Vilnius, Lithuania (hybrid)

Johnson Matthey IT (JM IT) is Johnson Matthey’s global IT function responsible for ensuring that our IT capabilities are not only able to support and integrate technologies but can also offer insight into future IT tools that could provide us with a competitive edge and improved operating efficiencies. 

The Data Platform Lead role, as part of our Data and Integration Platforms team, leads a team of data engineers delivering data capabilities to drive value across JM. The data lead will also manage the underpinning data platform.

The role holder will work with JM business team and IT mission teams to develop and operate data services providing technical leadership and direction. The role holder will also be required to collaborate with other business and engineering teams, particularly the integration team, data governance and reporting teams.  The role will be accountable for managing the team of data engineers, ensuring team development, and overseeing data solutions through design and implementation. The role will also be expected to drive forward our data best practice standards and guardrails to ensure the underlying platform is used safely and securely.

Your responsibilities:

  • Building and managing a high-performing data platform team. Cultivating a collaborative, innovative, and growth-oriented environment.
  • Collaborating with business leaders to understand their data needs and translate them into actionable data platform requirements. Advocating for the platform as a strategic enabler for data-driven decision making and unlocking business value from data.
  • Building strong relationships with key stakeholders across business units, data science, analytics, and engineering.
  • Managing relationships with data platform vendors and technology partners. Partnering with them to define roadmaps that align with business and technical needs.
  • Developing and executing a resource plan to support the data platform strategy and roadmap. This includes managing team capacity, skills development in data platform technologies (e.g., data ingestion, storage, processing, analytics), and allocation of budget for external resources like consultants or training. 
  • Leading the development of a comprehensive data platform strategy and roadmap aligned with company goals and data governance principles.
  • Managing the platform budget effectively, prioritising data platform features, functionalities, and projects based on business value, impact, and return on investment (ROI) in data initiatives.
  • Working with the data governance team and Data Owners to ensure the platform aligns to data governance principles and promotes data quality and consistency across the organisation.

Requirements for the role:

  • Experience leading and developing a team of data engineers (preferably, in the sustainable technologies sector) coupled with strong people influencing skills and stakeholder management skills.
  • In-depth understanding of Azure Data Services i.e Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Azure Synapse, Azure ASQL, DevOps, and Continuous Integration/ Continuous Deployment.
  • Experience in designing, building, and implementing data solutions.
  • Experience with working on data across multiple components and layers, within a common platform, including landing zones, common domains, and application data products.
  • Experienced in creating, maintaining, and driving adoption of data best practices, guardrails, and standards.
  • Good with defining and managing analytics (inc. error reporting, dashboards, and automated threshold-based alerts) for internal/ external consumption and for developers maintaining the data platform.
  • Familiar with matrix management structures and ways of working.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Knowledge of ARM templates, role-based access control (RBAC), Azure Purview, and data encryption at rest and in transit would be considered an advantage.

How you will be rewarded:

Salary range for this position is from 50,500 to 93,500 EUR per year depending on various factors, such as candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies. This role is also eligible to receive discretionary annual bonus that align with individual and company performance.
